Lanesfield School Museum
Okay, we all know that taking kids to museums is usually not that much fun. The kids get bored of looking at stuff on display long before you do and then the whining starts. “Can we go now? I’m bored!” I figured that the Lanesfield School museum would be a similar experience, but I booked a field trip for a local after school care program to go there anyway.
The Lanesfield School Museum is a one-room school house nestled in the middle of nowhere between Gardner and Edgerton, Kansas. The school house was in use for 90 years from 1873-1963. That in and of itself makes it fairly interesting. Now, when you visit, you are greeted by a costumed school teacher who will take you and your children through a typical classroom period at the school complete with demands for good posture, and having a classroom of multiple aged and graded students.
The museum has several special events throught the year including celebrations for Christmas, the Fourth of July, and May Day.
The museum is set in a beautiful stretch of conserved prairie land and it overlooks the Santa Fe Trail. It is definately a wonderful place to come visit with a picnic lunch and a nice getaway for families who are looking for short day trips. Now that the weather has gotten nicer, it would be a great place to go and let the kids play outside for awhile. The best thing about this museum is that it is FREE!
